Applications

Transpoxy Masterbond Alu (TO 4.66) is designed for protective coating applications where corrosion resistance, impact resistance and adhesion to prepared steel are required.

The product can be used on properly prepared steel substrates and is also compatible with most aged coating systems. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring enhanced water resistance and durable protection.

Surface Preparation

The performance of Transpoxy Masterbond Alu depends on the degree of surface preparation. All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from contamination before application.

For blast-cleaned steel, the surface should be prepared to a minimum of Sa 2, with Sa 2½ preferred according to ISO 8501-1:2007. The recommended surface profile and anchor pattern are between 40 and 70 microns.

For power-tool cleaning, the surface should be prepared to a minimum of St2, with St3 preferred. Care should be taken to avoid polishing the steel surface during preparation.

Water jetting can also be used as a surface preparation method. The recommended water pressure is at least 1000 bar, with the required cleanliness level depending on whether the coating is intended for atmospheric exposure or immersion.

Application Method

Transpoxy Masterbond Alu is supplied in two containers as one complete unit. The base component (Part A) should be thoroughly stirred using a clean mechanical mixer before the complete contents of the curing agent (Part B) are added.

The two components should then be mixed thoroughly. Only the amount of material that can be used within the specified pot life should be prepared.

If thinner is required, it should only be added after the two components have been mixed.

Application Methods

  • Airless Spray: Recommended nozzle pressure of 180–250 bar with a 0.48–0.66 mm nozzle.
  • Brush / Roller: Suitable for application, although airless spray is recommended. Multiple coats may be required to achieve the specified dry film thickness.

The recommended thinner and cleaner is Transocean Epoxy Thinner 6.03.

Film Thickness and Coverage

The recommended dry film thickness for Transpoxy Masterbond Alu is 125 microns per coat, with a specified range of 100–400 microns.

At the recommended film thickness, the theoretical spreading rate is approximately 6.4 m²/L.

Curing Times

Curing times depend on substrate temperature and environmental conditions. At 23°C, the typical touch-dry time is approximately 4 hours, while the dry-to-handle time is approximately 12 hours.

At 23°C, the full cure time is approximately 7 days and the pot life is approximately 4 hours.

Actual drying and curing times may vary depending on film thickness, temperature, ventilation, humidity and the preceding coating system.

Recoating

For two-pack products at 23°C, the minimum recommended recoating interval is approximately 12 hours. The maximum interval is listed as indefinite under the conditions specified in the datasheet.

For best intercoat adhesion, the subsequent coat should generally be applied before the preceding coat has fully cured. After prolonged exposure, the surface may need to be roughened to ensure suitable intercoat adhesion.

Application Conditions

During application and curing, relative humidity should generally remain below 90%. The substrate temperature should be at least 5°C and at least 3°C above the dew point of the air.

The minimum recommended temperature of the mixed paint is 15°C. Lower temperatures may require additional thinner to achieve suitable application viscosity, which can affect sag resistance and curing speed.

Storage and Safety

Transpoxy Masterbond Alu should be stored in accordance with applicable national regulations. Containers should be kept tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area away from heat sources and ignition.

The product is intended for professional applicators. Appropriate protective equipment, including suitable gloves, goggles and respiratory protection where required, should be used during application. Spray application should be carried out under properly ventilated conditions.

Always follow the product label, relevant safety documentation and local regulations before using the coating.
